South Africa’s Wild
A Poem by G. K. Bostic
(A Sonnet inspired by recent travels)
In Africa’s Limpopo province lies
the Waterberg with its vast mountain range
where moon of white shines clear in daytime skies
revealing animals both grand and strange.
I watch the herds of wildebeests who roam
Savannas… kudu searching crags to feed…
as I forget the stress of news from home
and watch them guard against the cheetah’s speed
While other beasts must slaughter to survive,
man’s acts of murder, theft, and rape are due
to greed and hate. So now I find that I’ve
a simple question I must pose to you.
Which are more savage… acts of African
wild beasts of prey, or is it unctuous man?
The Tree
Barren tree alone in the mist,
branches grasping for the sky
while roots explore the deep.
Leaves long gone,
laid bare, it waits…
listens to birds who come to rest
and sing upon her arms
while she sits silently.
As squirrels scamper about her limbs
and chipmunks linger below her height,
she stands in silence
waiting.
As clouds above yield dreary days below
While high above the sunlight fills the sky
So just beyond the stormy clouds we fly
To places never seen our spirits go.
The brilliance of your love thou doth bestow
It carries passion’s pleasures on a sigh
That speaks of secret answers owning why
The love that binds our hearts doth overflow.
Gone forever fear of hearts rejected,
For to lose such love would be a wretched curse,
So feel the heavenly rays from clouds reflected,
And drown me in your love, my heart immerse;
Two souls shall touch once more with warmth expected
And evoke the beauty of the universe.
Breath of Love
You come
for me
and I see
the longing
reaching
Now touching
savoured with the breath
of your love
Awakened by
digital delight
calming fears of
loneliness
climbing to
the peak of
pleasure
altogether
spent
